Ian is based in Pipers Melbourne office, where he practices in all aspects of intellectual property law and related commercial matters (including drafting intellectual property related agreements such as licences, assignments, confidentiality agreements, and product and technology development agreements).
Ian commenced his career in intellectual property in 1990 as a Patent Examiner with the Australian Patent Office and prior to that was engaged in medical research for ten years with Monash University and the University of Melbourne. His research was the subject of many publications in international scientific journals and he presented at medical and scientific conferences in Australia and internationally.
Ian has extensive experience advising on patents, trade marks and designs and in the assessment of intellectual property portfolios. He advises clients in a range of fields, but has a particular interest in biotechnology, medical, chemical and pharmaceutical patents.
Ian is registered as a Patent & Trade Mark Attorney in both Australia and New Zealand. He is also qualified as a Barrister and Solicitor in Australia. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys of Australia, a member of the Anti-counterfeiting Committee of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association, and presents an Australian national report and special topic report to the annual council meeting and general assembly.
