Intellectual Property

Intellectual Property (IP) is a term used to refer to types of intangible property rights based on "creations of the mind" and for which exclusive rights are recognised.  The main types of intellectual property rights include copyright (for protection of things such as literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works), trade marks (for protection of names, brands and logos), patents (for protection of inventions), designs (for protection of the particular appearance of a product), and in some jurisdictions trade secrets (for protection of certain processes and recipes).  There are also more specialised varieties of rights, such as circuit design rights, plant breeders' rights, plant variety rights, and industrial design rights.
