Ian is a senior member of the Pipers team and has over 20 years experience in intellectual property. He joined Pipers Wellington office in 2001, then moved to Geneva, Switzerland, where he established a satellite office which he managed for four years. Ian has since returned to Pipers Wellington.
Ian has a BSc in BioChemistry. He works in all aspects of patent and design law, including conducting due diligence, patent searching, patent drafting and legal opinion work.
His main areas of expertise include veterinary and pharmaceutical formulations, antibiotics, insecticides, pesticides, vaccines, as well as all manner of mechanical devices and sporting equipment.
Ian is actively involved in the provision of patent clearance work for a number of overseas generic pharmaceutical companies. He also provides advice to the Hong Kong Hospital Authority in relation to its use and supply of Generic Products.
When not at work Ian is happiest on the golf course, in the garden, watching marathons or indulging in his love of conversation.
Ian's prior experience includes eight years working at Abbott laboratories and 12 years working as a Senior Examiner in the New Zealand Patent Office. He pursued a brief professional cricketing career as a player/coach in Nottingham, England.
Ian regularly returns to Geneva in his role as WIPO's Head Tutor: Patent Drafting and Patent Information Distance Learning programmes. He is a Fellow of the NZIPA, and his other memberships include AIPPI and IPSANZ.
