Jim is the founder of Pipers.  He is one of Australasia’s most highly respected intellectual property specialists, having been working in the intellectual property profession since 1970.  Born and educated in England, Jim has a BA (Hons) / LLB.  He is a registered Patent Attorney in both New Zealand and Australia.

Jim has successfully litigated many complex patent and trade mark matters in various international jurisdictions, including representing clients in proceedings before the Privy Council.  Jim advises and represents universities, legal firms, industry leaders and government departments in all aspects of intellectual property.

Jim takes enjoyment in his family, a good book, his brewing of beer, winemaking, distilling (yes it is legal in NZ), and gardening.

Over the years Jim has held senior positions as both a Council Member and Examiner with the New Zealand Institute of Patent Attorneys and is a member of various respected bodies including FICPI, APAA, AIPPI, and the Licensing Executives Society.
