Jim is one of Australasia’s most highly respected Intellectual Property specialists. He has successfully litigated many complex Patent & Trademark issues in various international jurisdictions, including Europe. Jim advises a diverse range of clients including universities, legal firms, industry leaders and government departments and represents their interests in such matters as patent, trademark, copyright, trade secrets, technology transfer & licensing issues, infringement disputes, and foreign intellectual property issues.
Jim has even represented clients in proceedings before England’s famous Privy Council!
Jim’s passion for intellectual property and his belief that the community of intellectual property specialists, inventor’s and entrepreneurs can make real differences to our every day lives has meant that he has been the driving force behind the award winning Intellectual Property website www.piperpat.com. The piperpat website is well known to Intellectual Property specialists and inventors the world over. It is Jim’s great hope that one day www.piperpat.com will hold a sizeable archive of many of the world’s old statutes, patent text books and IP articles.
Born and educated in England, Jim has been active in the patent field since 1970, initially as a New Zealand Patent Examiner, then as a Patent Attorney in Australia and New Zealand.
Over the years Jim has held senior positions as both a Council Member and Examiner with the New Zealand Institute of Patent Attorneys and is a member of various respected bodies including FICPI, APAA, AIPPI, and the Licensing Executives Society.
When not representing clients or giving presentations on IP, Jim takes enjoyment in his family, a good book and an even better glass of a fiesty, Barossa Valley cabernet sauvignon.
